ABOUT ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, is a fascinating destination where Europe meets Asia, uniquely spanning two continents across the famous Bosphorus. Formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople, Istanbul has been the capital of three great empires: Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman, resulting in a rich cultural heritage and an extraordinary blend of history, architecture, and modern life.

The city is renowned for its stunning skyline, where magnificent landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and the Topkapı Palace stand alongside contemporary districts, stylish restaurants, and vibrant markets. From the bustling atmosphere of the Grand Bazaar to relaxing cruises on the Bosphorus, Istanbul offers a truly unforgettable experience and is considered one of the world’s most captivating cities.

DID YOU KNOW:

• Istanbul is the only city in the world located on two continents: Europe and Asia.
• The historic Grand Bazaar is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, with over 4,000 shops.
• The city has more than 3,000 mosques, giving Istanbul its iconic skyline of domes and minarets.
• Tulips, often associated with the Netherlands, actually originated in the Ottoman Empire and became an important symbol

of Turkish culture.

GETTING THERE:

Most international travelers will arrive at Istanbul Airport (IST), one of the world’s largest international airports, located approximately 40 km from the city centre.

A taxi ride to central Istanbul typically takes around 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic. Ride-sharing and hotel transfer options are also widely available.

GOOD TO KNOW:

Language: Turkish is the official language, but English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, tourist areas, and business settings, making communication relatively easy for international visitors.

Currency: The local currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). Credit cards are widely accepted, though carrying some cash for taxis, local markets, or small purchases is recommended.

Weather: September is generally warm and pleasant, making it one of the best times to visit Istanbul. Days are usually sunny, though evenings can be cooler.

Pack light clothing for daytime, but also bring a light jacket or cardigan for evenings.

For Mosque visits: arms and legs should respectfully be covered.

Average daytime temperature: 26°C
Average night-time temperature: 18°C
